Sports Canterbury’s Loose Play – Sustainably Sourced
WRITTEN BY KATE GISLASON – SUSTAINABILITY ENGAGEMENT LEAD

At EcoCentral, we believe sustainability is about more than just recycling — it’s about finding new ways to give materials a second life. That is why we are proud to support Sport Canterbury’s new Loose Play programme, an initiative that combines creativity, play, and sustainability for tamariki across our community. Loose Play is all about giving children the chance to use everyday materials in imaginative ways. Instead of traditional sports equipment, tamariki are encouraged to build, create, and invent using items that might otherwise be thrown away. The purpose of this programme fosters creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.
EcoCentral is contributing items from our EcoShop and ultimately diverting these materials from landfill, we are giving them a new purpose — one that inspires fun, exploration, and imagination.
Supporting the Loose Play programme reflects EcoCentral’s wider commitment to both sustainability and community. By working alongside Sport Canterbury, we are helping to show that waste reduction and play can go hand in hand. This is a simple but powerful example of how waste can be transformed into a resource.
