EcoCentral Diverts 60,166 Tonnes from Landfill

For the 12 months to June 2026, EcoCentral diverted 60,166 tonnes of material from landfill through recycling, composting, reuse and other recovery pathways.

This result reflects the scale of resource recovery activity across EcoCentral’s operations, including the EcoSort, EcoDrop Resource Recovery Centres and EcoShop. Each part plays an important role in giving materials another use, recovering value from resources and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The materials diverted included green waste, glass, paper, metals, cardboard, plastics, hardfill, whiteware, soil, plasterboard and reusable goods through EcoShop. Together these streams show how everyday sorting, recycling and recovery decisions add up to a significant outcome for Christchurch.

EcoCentral’s waste reduction work supports a more circular approach by keeping resources in use for longer. Through reuse, recycling, and recovery valuable materials can be processed for new uses rather than being buried in landfill.

EcoCentral continues to focus on practical waste minimisation, improving recovery pathways and supporting the community to make better decisions about materials that still have value.
